The pain and discomfort caused by sciatica can affect every aspect of your life. If you are having trouble sleeping, exercising, working, or spending time with family and friends due to back pain, one of our chiropractors here at O’Keefe Chiropractic Center can help. Chiropractic sciatica treatment in Medford can get to the root of what’s causing your sciatica, so that you can get back to your normal life.

What is Causing Your Sciatica?

Sciatica symptoms are caused when the sciatic nerve is compressed, pinched, or irritated. This is usually due to a herniated disc, degenerative conditions of the spine, or a bone spur. One of our chiropractors—Dr. Michael J O'Keefe or Dr. James S. Osenenko—can take x-rays or other diagnostic images to determine what the underlying cause of your sciatica is. This will help them develop a treatment plan.

Chiropractic Treatment Options for Sciatica

Chiropractic sciatica treatments are non-invasive and gentle. One of our chiropractors will use the least invasive treatment method possible but can refer you to a medical specialist if surgical intervention is necessary. Spinal manipulation and spinal decompression therapy are the most common and most effective sciatica treatment methods. During spinal manipulation, Dr. O’Keefe or Dr. Osenenko will use their hands or an instrument to manually manipulate your spine back into alignment. Spinal decompression is done with the use of a motorized traction table that the doctor controls using a computer. You lie fully clothed on the table and our chiropractor adjusts it so that it slowly and gently stretches your spine. Both procedures are meant to shift your spine back into alignment so that whatever is compressing or affecting the sciatic nerve retracts back into place.

Rehabilitative Exercises

After spinal decompression therapy, one of our chiropractors will recommend a series of rehabilitative exercises and stretches you can do at home. These exercises will promote the full healing of your discs and reduce the risk of the pain returning. Rehabilitative exercise will also strengthen the muscles that support the spine, protecting it from pain and damage. Our chiropractors may also recommend stabilizer exercises and resistance training.
